Supporting teens through the changes that matter
Periods have a way of arriving before anyone’s quite ready. And when a young person has additional needs, that shift can bring more than just physical changes. It can turn daily routines, comfort and confidence upside down.
Puberty can feel confusing and difficult to manage. From new sensations and hygiene routines to unfamiliar emotions, the experience can be overwhelming. With the right support and understanding, it can also become a time of growth, learning and self-awareness.
Sensory sensitivities are common among young people with SEND. Some may find the texture of pads or liners unbearable, feel distressed by the sensation of damp fabric, or become overwhelmed by the smells or sounds associated with standard period products. These are not minor issues; they can create genuine barriers to comfort, focus and daily life.
Managing hygiene and routines can also become more complex. Learning to track cycles, change products at the right time and manage washing or disposal can feel overwhelming. Some young people may struggle with privacy, body awareness or executive functioning. Others may need longer to learn the steps involved or may benefit from visual supports and reminders.
Create a calm, private space where your child can manage their needs independently and with dignity. Many families find a visual calendar or tracker helpful for predictability and understanding of the menstrual cycle. Practise routines together using step-by-step guides, prompts or checklists—especially when new tasks feel overwhelming.
Simple visual supports, such as reminders in the bathroom or packing lists for school bags, can build confidence. Most importantly, keep an open, positive tone. Periods are a natural part of life, and how we talk about them shapes how our children feel about their bodies. If periods are causing significant anxiety, distress or behaviour changes, speak to a GP, school nurse or paediatrician. Occupational therapists can also advise on sensory processing, personal care and routine building.
Because they’re worn just like pants, they can be easier for young people who struggle with fine motor skills or who feel overwhelmed by the fiddly nature of pads and their disposal. They also remove the pressure of needing to discreetly change products at school, which can be a major source of stress. They’re washable, reliable and environmentally friendly. Most importantly, they’re sensory-friendly and promote independence.
The products are designed to be gentle on skin, easy to use and reassuring for both teens and parents. Cheeky Pants also offers inclusive sizing and options suitable for those with additional needs.
