Kids Say the Funniest Things

Parenting a child with SEND comes with its fair share of challenges, but let’s be honest — it’s also packed with moments of pure comedic gold. Our kids have a way of seeing the world that’s refreshingly honest, delightfully unexpected and often downright hilarious. From their unique take on social situations to their unfiltered commentary, they’ve got the kind of wit no sitcom writer could ever dream of.

We asked SEND EDventurers to share the funniest things their kids have ever said — and we’re still laughing. Here are some of our favourites:

“I did my homework… in my head.”

Ingenious, really. A ten-year-old boy with dyslexia proudly declared this one during a parent–teacher meeting. His dad said, “The teacher tried to look serious, but I could tell she was fighting back a laugh. We’re calling it ‘conceptual learning’ now.”

“You said not to tell lies. So… yes, I was climbing the fridge.”

Honesty is always the best policy, right? This one came from a seven-year-old boy with ADHD who was caught scaling the kitchen appliances like Spider-Man. His mum said, “I wasn’t even mad — I was too impressed by his commitment to the truth.”

“I can’t go to school today. My teacher’s voice gives me a headache.”

Sensory sensitivities are no joke, but when this thirteen-year-old announced this perfectly valid reason to skip school, his mum admitted it was hard to keep a straight face. “He was genuinely upset, but the way he said it was so dramatic, like he was in a soap opera.”

“I don’t need to make friends. I already have you.”

Heart-melting or slightly worrying? You decide. One mum shared how her son, who struggles with social communication, declared her his “best friend forever” during a particularly tough week at school. She laughed, cried and then realised she’d better brush up on Pokémon stats.

“You call this dinner? Gordon Ramsay would faint.”

Food aversions are common, but one parent was left speechless when their eight-year-old, who has sensory processing disorder, unleashed this brutal critique of her spaghetti Bolognese. “I had no idea he even knew who Gordon Ramsay was!” she said.

“Why is it called ‘cat flap’? Shouldn’t it be ‘cat door’?”

cat flapEver been outwitted by a child? One dad shared how his son, who has autism, asked this during a perfectly normal trip to the garden centre. “He then spent the next 20 minutes listing all the things that are misnamed. By the end, I was questioning everything I’ve ever known.”

“I can’t be in trouble — I’m cute.”

This one came from a seven-year-old girl with Down’s syndrome who decided her dimples were a free pass from punishment. And honestly? She’s not wrong.

“I know I’m supposed to say sorry, but I’m not sorry yet.”

This came from a girl with autism who was caught red-handed smuggling crisps into her bedroom after bedtime. “I appreciated her honesty, even if it didn’t help her case,” her mum said.

Whether it’s their quirky logic, blunt truths or offbeat observations, our kids have a way of keeping us on our toes and grinning from ear to ear.

So, next time your child says something that has you laughing so hard you cry, jot it down. These moments might not make it into the school newsletter, but they’re the ones you’ll treasure forever.

And if you’ve got a funny story of your own, we’d love to hear it. Share it with us at SEND EDventures, because in this community, we know the best antidote to a tough day is a good laugh!
